Dear Parent or Guardian:
It is time to talk about your advanced science students’ Science Fair Project. We would like to invite you to work along with your child as they question, investigate, and report on an appropriate area of science. With your interest and encouragement, your child can develop the skills and attitudes needed to make this project a valuable experience. But, please encourage your child to do the work (as long as it is safe). Parents sometimes want to build an entire project, to make it “perfect”. It is more important that your child struggle with problems and try to solve them, because the learning is in the doing. Guide your child whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your child’s individual effort and design.
The project must be experimental in nature. In other words, students must test or experiment to collect measurable data to determine the answer to their question instead of just looking it up in a book or on the internet. Please encourage your children to pick a topic that they are genuinely interested in! This is the most important step because they will be working on the project themselves at home. If time permits, we will work on pieces of their projects in school. Topics must be “original”- something students do not already know the answer to.
This is a major project, but we will talk about it step by step over the entire 1st Semester. Time has been scheduled and work has been spread out so students may complete their project at a comfortable pace. However, it is important for your child to stay on pace and ask questions throughout the process so the project does not become burdensome. Your child will succeed by learning and understanding more about science and how scientists work. The real goal of the science project is stimulating your child’s curiosity about the world.
We look forward to your participation in our upcoming science project. Please call or email any time during the preparations for the project with questions. Let’s work together so that our science fair will be a memorable and pleasant experience for your child.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ratliff, Ms. Curren, Mrs, Pepper, Mr. Brandhuber, and Mrs. Miller
